Try to understand that we've discussed this dozens of times in many threads. We've beaten it to death but it's an important subject. The best temp for bettas is 78-80 degrees. A heater will help you maintain this and avoid stress on the betta. Less stress = less illness issues. I've provided a link, here it is again. Read Rachels comments and view her pics healthybetta.proboards19.com/index.cgi?board=smalltanks&action=display&thread=1121919734Many members use the 25W Thermal Compact Heaters in 2 1/2 and smaller tanks. I use them in many small tanks. With Betta Care there's a learning curve. Rachel and others have written excellent articles on the homepage. Look for pinned posts in each section. They are pinned for a reason. Reading them will give you a better basis for betta care. This site is not just about the message board. There's much more to it.

Some will. Best to stick to the brands mentioned. Some of the others are not as reliable. I've returned 25W VisiTherms that over-heated the water. Hagen Thermal Compacts performs consistently in my spawning tanks (with about 2.5G of water) There's no temperature fluctuation once you have it set. Very impressive especially for the price. Don't let the lps talk you out of it. Another pet shop will have it.
Go with a submersible heater rather than the type that hangs on the side.
I order most of my supplies from That Fish Place or Dr. Fosters. Great prices, fast shipping.

Yes, that's the one. (I use them too, in 2.5 gals and smaller. Have used them successfully for a short period of time in a .75 gal. I say short period because the fish was moved out to a 2.5 gal as soon as it was ready.)

I've been thinking about finding a very small species Pleco for my 5 gallon betta tank. There seems to be some out there that don't get very big at all. Has anyone had specific problems of plecos with bettas? They appear to be compatible: www.liveaquaria.com/general/fwcompatibility_chart.cfmSteve

I've been thinking about finding a very small species Pleco for my 5 gallon betta tank. There seems to be some out there that don't get very big at all. The "smaller" pleco species can still reach 4"-5" in length. That's getting a bit large for a 5 gallon tank especially if it's already filled with bettas. In short, you might get a pair of fish that goes wonderfully together, but as territory and swimming room decrease, tension between fish increases. You should be careful when keeping fish together that are of vastly different sizes. Even though plecostomi are generally not aggressive, that doesn't mean that there won't be fights, and there won't be accidental injuries, etc. And remember, any fish with long fins are generally a universal target for even the most docile tankmates.

Good point. I was thinking about upgrading to a 15 gallon mainly for the pleco, but really don't want to go there. Next thing I know I'll upgrade again and end up with a full blown FW aquarium when I'm already in the process of upgrading one of my other tanks to a 120 gallon. It's so easy to get carried away...

actually.. they do. just be sure to put a thermometer in the water and when you feed your betta, just look over and take note of the temperature.
