Going to college was a big shock for one who has had pets for years and years. I'd had three rabbits, two parakeets, three cats, and a dog, but not all at the same time. Dorm and campus apartment policy states that if it can't stay underwater for more than 5 minutes, it can't be a pet. That left me with one option: fish.
I wanted something small, and I wanted something colorful. On a shopping trip to PetCo to help out my neighbors with their cat (my neighbor knew nothing about caring for cats), I decided that I was going to get a betta. I remembered my friend telling me that they were very hardy fish, that they needed no filtration and preferred still water, and that you could only have one in a tank at a time. Perfect. I picked out Boris, who was actually white with rainbow fins at the store, and a 2 gallon all-inclusive tank and was on my way.
I admit that I didn't know TOO much about fish. I filled up the tank, conditioned the water, rinsed off the ornaments and decorations, and made sure the water was slightly warm to the touch. Then I dropped Boris in. Within an hour he had pinked up and I discovered I didn't have a white fish, I had a multicolored mutt fish: pink iridescence on one side, blue iridescence on the other with a giant marbled blotch. We've been through some fungal battles, but I think he's healthy now and hopefully we'll have some good years ahead of us.

I have been interested in betta since I watch my favorite TV show "La Femme Nikita" years ago. There was an episode that showed a blue and a red betta were..fighting. Anyway, that was not the point. Their beauty caught my eyes. Then I went to college, I found out my English professor has 3 bettas in her office. That reminded me that I have loved betta for a long time. So I decided to get two from the Chinatown pet store. YAY. And I have them now. >.<

My daughter was given one as a birthday present. We threw him in a bowl, fed him, changed water every 3 weeks and he lived 3 years. That was it!!!!! When I noticed him getting ill, I started researching online for treatment. I tried very much to save him. Unfortunately, he died a few weeks later. Now after reading all the do's and don'ts online, I have become more interested in Bettas. I purchased another one and he lasted a week and a half. Last week, I decided to try again. This one started looking ill also, so I have been on this site trying to nurse him along. Actually I think, he is starting to look better. The more I read, I would have to say we were awfully lucky with our first fish. Thanks for the great site.

I love seeing how everyone got interested in bettas. My story... A friend of mine had her daughter bring one home when a friend moved, and she wanted to go to the pet store to get a book, so we went to our local petsmart. we were looking at all the beautiful bettas and she came home with 2 new ones and i bought 1. i am now up to 3 and 2 of my sons loved mine so much that they have one each, which i take care of ;D so we now have 5 in the house, and one empty tank just waiting for my daughter to find the perfect one, she is very picky lol ****addition to our story. when I first got the bettas, I used a little glass bowl each...way to small...so I went to my LPS and found those 1/2gal betta tanks. I thought the boys were so happy. First we lost Jake to a weird fuzzy white growth, so I started doing water changes every other day thinking it was just yucky water. Nope then I was here learning and decided that the boys needed heat as the so we started getting tanks ready but unfortunately my learning curve was too slow for Zues and Heratio. I now have Percy and Lazarus and my youngest son still has Cliph. Now that I know more, no betta shall EVER have less than 5 gallons, be colder then 78 or be unfiltered in this house again.****

My coworker purchased a black Betta for our office. It has been just about 1 year that we had it. She does all of the maintaining of his 1 gallon bowl.
It took me about 4 months after our office Betta to buy one. After I bought mine, I discovered a friend's aunt had 10! She is the Betta queen! She bought most from a local pet store but some were W*l-M*rt destined to die fish, so she buys those and gets them healthy.
I am not a pet person, so a Betta (low upkeep) is my type of pet. I could never have a cat or dog as I would need to hire an in home pet sitting service.

We've always had a fish tank in our house when I was growing up, and from time to time we would get to go to the lps and pick out some new fish. Every time we would go, I would want to get a betta, but wouldn't be allowed to (obviously because my mom knew better that bettas weren't the best community fish). So a couple of years ago, I decided that it was my turn to go and get my long-awaited betta. That one turned into 2, then 3.... I now have 28: 21 males, 7 females
