A good smallish pleco is the bristlenose. They tend to max out at about 4", though I have seen a 6" specimen. They do a great job eating algae.
Good advice was given on supplementing a pleco's diet with veggies. We also feed shrimp pellets or Nutrafin sinking pellets to ours. Spirulina tablets are also good.

My goldfish and pleco are outgrowing their tanks, but not at the rate the pleco my vet had! It died of extreme (for a fish) old age recently, and was more than a foot long and, more impressively, about eight inches around at the widest point. Where did he lie on the tank bottom? Wherever he wanted! The variety I have probably won't get THAT big, but once they're moved to a 29-gallon, I'm expecting he'll get bigger.
To anyone who feeds algae tablets--WATCH OUT. If they don't get it all, it can cause nightmarish blooms. We had to stop feeding them because they tank was getting overrun, and there isn't room for more algae eaters. (In any case I've had bad luck with them going after the other fish in tropical tanks, anyway. The pleco's much nicer in that he hasn't attacked his tank mates.)

We don't feed algae tablets to our plecs. Found through experience that they don't like them much and often don't eat them.
True that common sailfin plecs and bushynose plecs are very docile towards other tank inhabitants and will even let fry swim underneith their noses without touching them.
