Moby lives in a heated 5 gallon tank with Walter the black mystery snail. I have noticed more and more that they seem to hang out near each other. Moby will swim over to where Wally is and just float near him, or Wally will creep to where Moby is resting in the plants and just camp out on the glass nearby. They have been together in the tank for a good 8 months and it seems like they search out each other for company. It is a fairly frequent occurance to see them hanging out together. Do bettas make friends with other aquatic animals? Are Moby and Walter "buddies"?

It happens =)
Of course fish don't feel companionship to the extent that higher animals feel, but at the same time it's stimulation which they would not otherwise be receiving. Animals with nothing to do, do nothing, so it may be a source of entertainment for the betta.

If I find a card table and poker chips stashed under a plant, I will know they are pals. Moby is going on 4 years old, bless his cranky old heart.

Yeah, Moby is a geezer. I am quite attached to him. Some days I think he is getting ready to pass on, barely moving and just looking bad. Then he perks right up and boogies around his tank. I think he is too mean to die. I will miss him when he does finally go. Walter will too, I think. Of course, Wally would need another pal...
