I have a 4.5 gal tank that I just completed cycling due to the wonderful information provided by BettaMVP. I am now ready to introduce a new betta to his home... but...
I have a question about standard levels of evaporation. I just went away for a week and half. During that time, I lost over a gallon due to evaporation. Is that normal???
Fingers crossed that all goes well. I hope to get a fish later today. g

That seems a little excessive to me. Do you have a de-humidifier by any chance?
What kind of lid do you have on your tank?

I lose almost a gallon a week in evaporation in my 5.5g tank. My house is very dry. I need to add water to all containers everyother day at least.

Okay, Nancy's post makes me feel better. I live in a very dry climate (california). I do have a lid on the tank, but there is a large gap between the lid and the top line of the water (it's an unusual tank), so I am sure that contributes..... I'll just keep topping it off I suppose! s

That makes sense! -- dry climate, water evaporates. I hadn't thought to ask where you live. We live in the hot, humid mid-west, where evaporation is less of a problem. Glad you got the problem solved! sef

Congrats on the cycle, glad I could help!
With my central air running in the summer, my five gallon evaporates about a half gallon a week. With the heat running in the winter, it's very dry in the house and even more evaporates than that.
Do you have an airstone in the tank? I know the tanks I have them in have a lot more evaporation than the ones I don't.
Also, if you keep salt in your tank, remember that it does not evaporate so don't add more when topping off you tank.
