After a LONG wait, my Master Test Kit has finally arrived (was on back order). Of course, the first thing I wanted to know were my NH3 levels (glad to find out they are zero). A bit more effort than the strips, but what a difference in truly seeing the make up of your water! What would be your suggestions on other tests that would be enlightening about our water conditions?

What have you tested for?

So far I've tested for Chlorine, Chloramine, Nitrates, Nitites, NH3, PH, total Alkalinity, Hardness, and Buffering Capacity. I guess the next interesting group might be Heavy Metals. What do you think?

What do you think? Lol sure =) I think you're pretty well covered though. If you're concerned about metals the only test kits you'll typicall find in an aquarium store are copper test kits. You can always get these things at a chemical supply company of course, but they're not as user friendly to a hobbyist. You might find also find iron test kits. And as a note...I could taste the copper in our water when we had the house supply line replaced with a copper one a couple years ago. If you have a very old, or very new house, I'd be more concerned about metals than in other situations. You could always test for silicates, oxygen content, and CO2 content, but the two latter ones will vary depending on the time of the year, and the first one usually isn't a big deal for your average freshwater aquarium.

Awwww...I was having such fun playing chemist! Seriously, though, these tests are important information in our quest to ensure the best quality of life for our fish. I'm really glad you suggested I get one. Now I can finally relax about my ammonia levels.

Awwww...I was having such fun playing chemist! Hehe...well you've probably done more extensive testing in the past week or so, than most people have done in the entire time they've kept fish. Keeping fish is all about water chemistry, and lots of people don't pay enough attention to it. I'm glad you're having fun with this =)
