Does anyone have any of these or have some experience with them?
Out of the 6-8 websites I've visited, half say max size is 1.5 - 2inches, the ohter half says 6-8 inches.
I didnt read about any other variations of checkered barbs so I'm at a loss.
Also, do they eat plants? (it says they eat plant flake food so that might mean something..)

Checkered ones are apparnetly notorius for not being fin nippers, which is the first thing that attracted me to them. I need no violence!

Checkered ones are apparnetly notorius for not being fin nippers, which is the first thing that attracted me to them. I need no violence! I've never had checkered barbs before (or even seen them before ) but I did a little poking around and from what I saw fin-nipping didn't seem like an issue. Barbs are very active, and somewhat skittish fish. If you're worried about peacefulness then the ones you want to watch out are the various types of tiger barbs, and the ones that look like tiger barbs (overly triangular features, stocky bodies.) These are the types that are docile in certain situations, and highly in others. (The black shark, red-tailed shark and rainbow shark can also be aggressive but they're another story.) As for size, I've also run into the size discrepency when looking at web pages. They're probably 2" fish rather than 6-8 inch fish. It would probably be best to find a recent fish atlas, or write to somebody at a tropical fish magazine to confirm. You weren't planning on putting these guys into your 6 gallon were you?

Get at least a 12 gallon if you want to keep the barbs...preferrably a 15 or 20Long

Hey briggs, I just went and looked in my big fish book and it says that they can reach six inches. They also mature very quickly. It does say that they are a peaceful fish, though. Hope that helps. Karin
