I keep my betta in a 3-gallon filtered eclipse 3 with several live plants as well as a flowerpot and a rock to provide hiding places (Merlin ignores the flowerpot.) I've had the betta for only a few days but he's doing great! So great that I'm almost afraid to alter a winning strategy, but I've been considering getting a single albino corydoras catfish to put in there with him. The fish store where I got the betta (a very good dealer) has several young cories that would be perfect, and I know the albino bronze cory will not outgrow the tank or harass Merlin. Just to clarify, I'm an experienced fishkeeper but have never before kept bettas in anything but a species tank. I won't get a cory if there's a more than a slight chance it'll mess with Merlin's mojo cause I'd like to have him around for a while.
Thoughts on this idea?

From experience my bettas generally got along with cories. But 3 gal is almost too small for another fish to be in there with him.... If it's not that big of a deal I would just leave hime in there alone, but that's only my opinion

I agree that for a tank that size it's not the best match/environment for both of them. Also, corys are schooling fish and shouldn't really be kept by themselves.
I'd look into snail(s) or something of the sort as a tankmate for a betta, although even then he might harass them depending on the individual fish.

Yeah, I saw a small snail in there on day 2; I think it came in on one of the live plants. It either died or Merlin kicked it's butt cause I haven't seen it since. I think I'll forgo getting a cory cause the tank is a little small, and Merlin seems to be doing just fine with only me for occasional company. He eats like a little pig and has built himself a ridiculously huge bubble-nest in the back corner away from the filter wash.

My betta didn't bother my cory, and my one that's in with two oto cats acted like he was going to attack them when in the cup readjusting after they moved in, but he's not made any move to attack them. The one that lives with the otos had a test run with the platy to see if they got along (which they didn't) and he didn't pay any attention to the cories she lives with.
If you ever decide to move to a bigger tank, I'd highly recommend some cories. They're real fun to watch when they start playing together

Yup, I've had them before and love 'em. Probably the most low-maintenance fish I've seen. I might get a 10 gal community tank started after I move, we'll see how things go.

I made the mistake of getting a single Cory.. Don't do it. They are schooling fish and are definetly not happy by themselves.
