Let's say I'm trying to control a mini-cycle in a tank, and I do a water change and then want do tests to see if the WC made any chemistry changes. How long should I wait after the water change before testing? (forgive my ignorance, I'm chemistry-impaired...never took it, took zooology and A&P instead

uuuuuhhhhhh it was a general question...but let's use my 29 as an example
29 gallons, filter is 170gph
is there a formula? Like x gallons/flow rate = time to wait?

170gph / 29 gal = 5.9 turnovers/hour
I can't really make a quantitive comparison on this (can't do solid numbers) but i can make a qualitative comparison (saying that more water circulation means faster mixing of chemicals.)
Now, in an hour's time, the water should have been well mixed, and I'd say that if you take an ammonia reading, it should be fairly accurate.
If there was only one turnover in an hour, I'd be hesitant to say that the chemicals were evenly distributed in the water.

so for the non-mathmatical people in the crowd are you saying "wait a couple hours at least?"
Mostly, I just wanted to make sure that I shouldn't be waiting 24 hours to do the testing.

There I go being an engineer again...
24 hours will guarantee the result you're getting will be accurate, but after an hour it should be close enough.
