I bought the Eclipse Explorer for my betta Doofus and he didn't seem to like the current the filter made. I ended up just removing the filter and using the tank without it...You just have to change the water every two weeks and it is fine. Also, use marbles not gravel if you want a substrate. If you don't want a substrate I recommend nothing. It is easier to keep clean with a turkey baster and your betta will have more room...

i agree that the bio wheel has alot of the good bacteria but so does every surface inside the tank and filter and gravel that has oxigenated water touching it and that is a good thing not bad ... you do loose a good amount of good bacteria when you put in a new filter and will probably have a small spike shortly afterwards ... all my guys and gals now live in cycled tanks ... the guys in 10 gallon devided 6-plexes the gilrs in one 30 gallon ... one thing to consider on devided tanks is that if onefish gets a problem then probably all will and everyone will need to be treated in that tank.... as for flareing i also agree they will flare alot at first then loose interest and normally flare jsut when they are beinf fed ... atleast thats what happens in my tanks.... you do need to provide a hidey for each guy that he can hide from his neibor this can be just a bushy plant or one of the regular hideing places ...( i use live java moss) the guys can hide in it when they dont feel like flareing .... i heat my gallon tanks by sitting them on a human waterproof heating pad, you keep it very low, watch the temp carefully if the room tamperature is unstable
id do the same with my 2 and a half but hes happy at the temp room temperature allows so far
