I have heard arguments on other boards that the aloe in Stress Coat is too heavy and can affect gill function. I personally never noticed a problem with it, but switched to a product without a slime coat additive since I don't move my guys around for water changes.

Hi! I have read that the aloe vera in the stess coat could be the reason for breathing problems. My betta is also having heavy breathing. So I took him off of stress coat and put him on AmQuel - plus and NovAqua. But the directions says 1 teaspoon for 10 gals. But I have a 1 gal tank . I am using 1ml or 1/8 of a teaspoon is that the right amount? My water is also aged for three days. I hope someone will know. Thank you

While I didn't actually read through all of this past thread, the aloe debate in water conditioners is just speculation as far as I know and has never actually been proven to be harmful to fish.
The dosage for 1-gallon tanks is about 14 drops per gallon. The amount you are using sounds fine.

Hi!
Thank you I always used stress coat I wanted to make such I was using the right amout. I am planning on moving him into a 15 gal tank when his popeye is better. the tank belong to a hermit crab that died so now I have a 1 gal bowl sitting in a 15 gal tank that has sand on the botton and a heater on the botton that is how I am keeping the bowl warm. The heater keep it at 78-80 all the time. I have to say that the water in his bowl looks must better with the novaqua/amquel in it. With the stress coat I was seeing a oil on the top of the water.

I have used both Stress Coat and the Amquel+/NovAqua combination and I also prefer Amquel+/NovAqua. I've never noticed any breathing problems, but there seem to be quite a few negative opinions about the aloe issue, and to me it's not worth the risk. I also like that the Amquel+ neutralizes the ammonia, which Stress Coat does not do. (It's funny, I was the person who started this thread last January! I've learned a lot since then, and I guess I've formed some opinions, too. )
