Canister filters work the same way as any power filter does...pass water through a mechanical medium, then through media with lots of surface area (for bacteria), and then through a chemical stage or a second, finer mechanical stage.
Mechanical media on filters should be cleaned fairly often, and doing this is especially important for canister filters. Clogged media results in a pressure drop, and combined with the fact that most canister filters have to lift a water column that's a few feet high, clogged mechanical media can cause a large drop in performance.
High quality canister filters are in between a hang on back filter and a true sump filtration setup. They're good in some respects (portability, compactness, don't have to drill your tank, high flow rate, etc.) but require more attention than a HOB filter.

oh wow thanx! every site i went to said the opposite of coarse they do they wana sell well.... u remember my filter brian? o posted a drawing of it a while back? a overflow one.... anyways... comparing that to a canister filter... whcih is better? cuz a hang on the back filter for my tank isnt available... the size and flow rate i need to get 3 maybe :S the ones they sell here r for small tanks.... and im not so profesional into the drilling and stuff like that my mom wont let me in the 1st place ... so what do u think? if mine is good then ill just have to get a stronger power head and im ok... if not iv seen many huge canister filters around for tanks even larger than mine...... thanx again bri!

hmmm.... ok... the overhead filter has 4 thin sponges, each r maybe about 15-18 CM long... maybe 9CM wide and only 1 CM thik... hmm... the power head is weak im sure of that! and all other power head dont fit the tube that leads to the spraybar that sprays into the compartment that has the sponges... the tank is 320Liters which is i think 85galons... and unfortunatly the only canister filters i found here are for 300Liter aquariums... and the better one (EHIME) is for 230liter aquariums... so im kinda in a twist... i could get a better power head and redo the whole filter area to fit that particular powerhead... but do u see that my filter (the way i explained) is enough for so much water? i will get some photos tomorow morning hopefully and post small ones here thanks for ur help on this bri!

Alright, let me see if I understand this...you're going to get a canister for your 82 gallon instead of using the thing you drew a picture of?

And remember, you can always run two smaller filters instead of one large one. Cleaning will have less of an impact then =) Is your new filter an Eheim? Those have a good reputation.
