I put in two pieces of brazillian bogwood to create a hiding spot for my beta...turned the water yellow...I think over time it actually raises the PH.....

If it's towards a tan/gray color it should be alright.
The yellow discoloration is from tannic acids, which both soften the water and lower the pH. Putting a piece in your tank will require more frequent water changes.
Stay away from wood that's dark brown, as it's still full of tanins and may have other toxic chemicals in it.
If you could post a picture of the tank with the wood in it then it would be a big help in assessing whether or not this is going to work for you.
