Sef....it looks like after I added the aquarium salt that the white, cottony stuff went away....I still see a very small spot of it on his head.... Also....is it normal for their faces/heads to be kind of splotchy-brown colored? Even though the rest of their body is blueish/green? I'm wondering if this is just his coloring or could be some kind of disease?

can you take a pic and post it? 2 of my guys have coloring on their heads that could be considered splotchy. A darker color with spots of a lighter color. I guess you could call them 'fich freckles' Anyway, don't be surprised if your Betta'c color changes. My Giovanni and my unnamed new guy both changed color once at home and given healthy conditions.

I don't know how to do that! But I will ask the hubby and see if he can help me post a picture....it might be a while though! I hope it's just normal coloring...although in all the pictures I've seen on this site...I have yet to see one with that kind of coloring on them.....oh well...

Brinsc, you said Sapphire is blue (logically that makes sense, given his name) - I have several blue or blue-green bettas and most of them do have brownish faces and also brownish coloring on the back of the head (top of the head?) All of my guys seem completely happy and healthy, and if you cruise around enough betta breeding sites you will see a few with this coloring - although not many, as it's probably a negative gene for breeders - but I think it makes them look distinguished Interestingly, my red bettas Harold (RIP) and Pentecost do not have the brownish faces. I think it's a feature of the blues. Also, about jumping - yes bettas can jump but not all bettas do jump - and you won't know which yours is until he does jump! Keeping the water level at least 1 inch lower than the top of the tank helps, and again, you can get the fishnet material at the craft store and run elastic around the edges. It doesn't look great (unless you sew much better than I do ) but you can go to work and not worry about finding Mr. Betta on the floor when you get home. Hope you're enjoying Sapphire - we look forward to seeing a picture if your hubby can help you post one! (Been there )

Hi Brinsc- I understand about the pic, I am not someone you could call 'Tech Savvy' - I also rely on the hubby for that! I really don't think its disease that is causing your fish to be splotchy. Of course, you should keep an eye on him and monitor his health. Under the pic pages, I have a post titled 'Giovanni'. there is a link to a photo of my Giovanni, who is blue and it shows his head. Please take a look at it and compare your Betta's spots to Giovanni's. Please be aware that when I first got Giovanni, his body was a light pinkish and his fins were a light purple. Better care and health caused him to change colors. I also have this new fish that was light green when I bought him and now has a black head with a deep blue body. Color changes seem to be a sign of illness or with my guys, the return of health.

Here's my two cents:
when I got my first betta and began doing research, I really freaked out about the jumping thing, but it has yet to happen to me. If it does happen to you remember that bettas breathe air, so if he does an escape trick, put him back in the water. Odds are he'll pull through.
I hope that you enjoy your new betta. Based on the questions you are asking and the care you are trying to give him it sounds like he is going to have a long, healthy life ;D

I've already put in way more than two cents but about the jumping: I've got one betta who jumps up as if to nip when I'm feeding him. Other than that, my guys swim and dive. Once during a water change Anakin jumped out of the 'holding cup', but as Rielle says, they can breathe air and he was only out for less than a minute (probably less than 15 seconds, but I did turn my back : Anyway, he's fine. But that's why I keep my water level down a bit in each tank "just in case" ;D

A lot of Bettas do have splotchy color like that. I probably wouldn't worry about it unless it spreads, starts to look raised, or changes shape in some way. Napleon is a red Betta, and he has splotches not only on his (handsome) face, but also in one area of his body. It has always been there.
