Hmmm.....well, I don't know quite what to make of this. When I first set up Horatio's tank, I bought some of those little live plant "pods" from WallyMart, and one of them in particular has grown pretty large. It is an Aponogeton. Well, Horatio has started nipping at the tops of the leaves (which now reach the water line), and has bitten one leaf almost totally in half. I keep finding little pieces of plant floating on the surface, and keep fishing them out with the net. Is it normal for a Betta to do this? This morning my husband told me that he saw Horatio jump out of the water, grab a chunk of the plant in his mouth (which he tore off), and swim to the front of the tank with the chunk in his mouth as if to say, "See what I did?" Is it harmful for him to do this? I don't care as much about the plant, as I am concerned why he would do this. Here is a picture of the plant from another web site; ours have thinner leaves, and are not as full yet:

Can you tell if he is actually eating pieces off of the plant or is he just tearing it up? I don't think it will hurt him, but I don't know about this type of plant, maybe someone who does will chime in.
This is just a guess, but it sounds to me like he doesn't like something about the plant and is trying to attack it. Maybe he doesn't like it sticking out of the water or something. Bettas can be pretty particular about the stuff in their homes and if something changes, they don't always like it. Maybe if you trimmed off the leaves that are sticking out of the water, he would be happy. Silly little guy lol.

It looks like he's just ripping pieces off of it and not eating; there was a piece floating on the top that I had missed, and I saw him put it into his mouth for a second and immediately spit it out. So I don't think he's ingesting it. Still.....there are some large chunks still unaccounted for! LOL
I think you're right about not liking something about the plant. Horatio was just fine with it while it was smaller and growing; it's only since the leaves reached the water line (they grow fast!) that he has taken an interest in it.
I guess I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens. Not sure about cutting the leaves, but I guess I can do it if it continues to be a problem for him.
Thanks!! Quirky little guy!
