Sorry for all the questions but I'd like to make my betta as comfy as possible! How big should a hidey hole be? Would a white 8oz yogurt container work? Should it be opaque? Thanks in advance!

You would want it to be something that is smooth to the touch with no rough edges and aquarium safe, and gives the fish enough room to comfortably go in and out of it. It doesn't necessarily have to be opaque as I think it often depends on the individual fish and what they like. I probably wouldn't use a yogurt container for a few reasons, mainly because it had food in it and if you used soap to rinse it out I wouldn't stick it in a fish tank. I'm not sure if the dye would come off in water over time either.

There are a ton of things you can use as hideys. I just picked up a red flower pot for each of my two Bettas. My betta, Don, who is in a 10 gallon, loves his, while Rocky, who is in a 1 gallon, seems to be ignoring his. But he does have a ton of silk plants in his tank that he can hide behind and swim through. That would be my second suggestion. Voitive candle holders work nice, and there are people around here who have used hamster hideys and tiny souvenier (sp) mugs (but they should be lead-free).

I'd stick to brand new ones. If a pot was used for plants, it could have absorbed chemicals. Even with a new pot, I wash it in clear water until I feel comfortable with it. I have java fern in small terra cotta pots in several of my tanks. They make good hideys too. One breeder I know uses large terracotta pots in his 10G spawn tanks. He places them on their side in six inches of water. His males build nests in them.

Thanks for the ideas. I will have to see if Aztec is interested or not. He has taken to sleeping near the surface behind a plant leaf.
