So Wicket finally discovered that snails are, indeed, edible. He ate 3 of the 8 Malaysian Trumpet Snails living in his tank. The other guys are hiding in the substrate, probably chanting "Snails are friends, not food!" I guess this is sort of for the best, because those guys would probably overrun my tank if left unchecked.
The Admiral's and Biggs's snails are ok, and doing their cute little snail-thing, which basically entails them climbing on top of rocks and sucking the life off them.

What a tasty treat for Wicket indeed! I would be careful though, since bettas can get easily constipated I wonder if getting too many snails in their belly could cause some bloating or negative effects. Maybe hold off on additional feeding for a day or two?

Forgive my ignorance, but what type of snails are you talking about? Are they the ones that are small and seem to infest all the Elodea I ever buy?

Thanks bethie I didn't feed him this morning, and I'll probably give him a smaller portion than usual tonight. And to PPV, this is what they look like. They're very small, and apparently, they're livebearers. They do tend to hitch a ride in on plants. They seem ok; I haven't caught them nipping at my ferns, but they do seem to gravitate toward my driftwood covered in Java Moss. But they spend most of their time under the substrate.

Jedicat - thanks for the pic. It certainly looks like the snails I have on my Elodea. Keep an eye on them - mine tend to be quite the champion reproducers! Although it sounds like your Wicket is going to help out with population control.

Man, do I really know what you're talking about. My pet fish Schuuichi was in a 5 gallon tank with a snail friend, and a small pleco. I put the snail friend in there the night before, and the next morning... the poor thing had one eye and was almost ripped to shreds. I quickly made up a tank for him and put him in there by himself with some food and plants, but that didn't save the poor guy. It seemed odd to me that he never bothered my pleco, but the snail he hated. Maybe he just had a taste for snail. Thought I'd add my snail story.
