Ming hopped out of the jug I had him in while I was changing his water (I was REACHING for the temp lid! e_e). He only fell about six inches (the height of the jug), but he's missing a couple of scales at his dorsal fin. Is it alright to give him a frozen bloodworm or two to distract him a bit? He's flaring at a mirror at the moment, so he doesn't seem at all sickly. I put a tablespoon of aquarium salt in the water, just to do something to keep parasites at bay for now. This is fresh water and everything was washed in clean, warm water, so I'm not too worried about infection. I'll be heading down to the pet store tomorrow to look for something to help scale repair along, too. Thoughts appreciated . -Flash

Hi -
How is Ming doing after his adventure? When Finnian got away and into the sink during a water change, I went ahead and fed him his regular meal - after I checked him over and watched him cruise around a bit in his fresh water. As long as Ming is acting normally, I would feed him as usual. I did offer only a small portion at first, to see if he was interested. When he gobbled it down, I figured all was well.

He's actually more active than before. I think because the jug wasn't clear plastic he was claustrophobic in there after his bowl. It was his own tank water, and he's never tried to jump out of the bowl (though it does have a lid on it, just in case ) I gave him a couple of bloodworms, which he didn't notice at first. They sank to the gravel, and he ate them really quickly when he found them. Now he sits on that spot to beg .

How large is your bowl? 1-tablespoon sounds like a bit too much salt for anything around a gallon or two. More of the illness you want to be looking out for is fungus or fin rot, rather than parasites.
Glad to hear that he is mending ok. Bettas jump, sometimes when you least expect it, but it is most predictable during a water change. For my guys, I scoop them out with a cup and have the cover in my other hand so I can immediately put something over the top. They're only uncovered about 1/2 second this way. I tend to use a glass (you just wait for them to come near the top, stick the glass into the water and it creates a vacuum that sucks them and some water right in) and cover it with a napkin and rubber band. Once you're done cleaning the tank, just lift off the cover but still hold it over the glass and gently pour them back into the clean tank.

Mm, the box of salt said "1 tsp per gallon", but I didn't want to put too much in, so I used just less than one. It doesn't seem to be bothering him, though... Ed: The bowl is around 2 U.S gallons -Flash
