I was just wondering that when bettas get older do they sort of 'shed' the ends of their fins to keep them from getting too long? My betta, Gordy, is 8 months old and the ends of his fins aren't as perky as they used to be. They are sort of curled up at the very end and the end of his dorsal fin looks like it has a little bend in it and it might come off. He just got over a pretty bad case of constipation that I thought might be dropsy so I gave him Marycin-Two for 5 days so I'm not sure if that might have anything to do with it, or if it's an injury, or if they just shed the ends of their fins in older age.

curled fin edges can often mean too much ammonia. How often are you changing his water?

Curled edges usually occur on bettas who are kept in small, unheated, not-often-cleaned habitats. Making an overall improvement in his living conditions should eliminate it.

UPDATE: Thanks guys! A few days before I had noticed his fins looked a little pathetic I had done a 60% water change, but I guess it wasn't enough for his 1 galon tank. I did a 100% water change and his fins look beautiful now! I appreciate your sugestions.

Great news! Amazing what a little clean water can do for a fish.
