When I went to the LFS yesterday to look for a female betta (which they were out of) I looked to see what males they had and I thought they had made a mistake and put the females in separate bowls up with the males as some had short fins. I have been wanting a Plakat for some time and finally decided I was going to have to order one so I thought no way those are Plakats. I asked the manager and she said yes, that was the first time the supplier had sent them Plakats. He is beautiful. He is bluish purple with red rays in his fins when he flares. I named him Sudan and I am so happy! Now I have 3 delta males, a Plakat male and two females. I have got to stop going to the Pet Store. ;D

Plakats are fun... Very spunky little guys! They do seem to be more aggressive, and display a lot more towards each other than splendens do, but I have found that when spawning them, they usually are quite peaceful with each other, and plakat males are great betta dads!

I have a kinda odd question for anyone who'd know.. I've seen pictures of female crowntails, and I know that the female carries the genetics for the tail type as well.. Are there female plakats? And if so, do they look any different than the usual females? Anybody got any photos? Just curious...

Male plakats actually do often have slightly longer, fuller finnage than female plakats do. They also usually have a more male-like appearance than females do, at least to my eye, and in my experience. Though I have seen some female plakats that looked, and acted, just like males. You never would have known they were females other than the oviposter, but I think in most cases, it isn't all that hard to tell, once you know what you are looking for. (its much easier in real life than in photos as well) Golden Pearl Plakat male Pastel Plakat male Marble Plakat male in my avatar. Marble Plakat female (bad pic. but you can kind of tell that this is a female, she doesn't look quite like the males. She has shorter ventral fins, and her anal fin is much shorter, finnage is not so full, etc...)

Oooh, I see now. I've just been on this plakat kick since I found out Perseus was one (i.e. after his fins grew out enough that I could tell he definitely wasn't a female). I'm pretty sure he's a younger one, too, since I really did think he was a female when I got him. (I *swear* there was an ovipositor there at one point... Guess not ) They're just so pretty... Who need long fins when there's SO much personality? It must be an extension of my love of the female bettas...

Rhyn, your probably not crazy about thinking that you saw an oviposter on your plakat when he/she was younger. Very young bettas have the tendency to sometimes change from "females" into "males". Also, all bettas have an anal spot located very near to the oviposter. On young bettas it is often hard to tell if what you are seeing is an oviposter, or just the anal spot, as the spot is sometimes more visable when bettas are young.

check out the powerful tail & muscular body. & this hercules is only abut 4 mths old. here's another excellent example..
