I have two veil-tail bettas at home at the time. My first one(Bubbles, named by my 3 year old sister) usually would only eat about 2-3 small pellets at a time, so we feed him three times a day and he seems fine.
But...
My new betta, Elmo(once again named by my sister), would eat the whole container if we let him! I feed him 3-4 pellets in the morning, lunch, and around supper. Everytime I pass by his tank he swims to his feeding area and does the 'feed me dance'. Should I feed him?

3-4 3 times a day seems like alot to me, i bet his stomach is huge.
In the morning i feed my double tail..
1 x fd blood worm 1 x fd brine shrimp 2 x betta bites
in the night time he gets 3 betta bites. sometimes ill give him one in the afternoon and 2 at nght.
my crowntail gets 3 betta bites in the morning and at night, or i divde it up, 2 morning, 2 afternoon, 2 night.
aaaaaaaaaaand my pin tail gets the same thing, though his eye sight seems to suck so i usualy drop a bit more in until he decides to get it. I have lots of plants so im not worried about leaving 1 or 2 pieces of food in there.\
oh an to answe your question, no dont feed him when he does the dance unless its feeding time! Its hard to resist but i had to do it! Eventualy they might stop doing it. My pin tail stopped doing the begging dance.

briggs is right, they will do the feeding dance and eat until they are sick I feed mine twice a day- it sounds like you are feeding yours a lot...but I'm not an expert, so someone else is welcome to chime in. JoAnna

People think they have to feed their bettas until they explode, and that bettas will get big and strong that way. More than likely what will happen is that the bettas will not eat all the food, the uneaten food will rot in the jars/tanks, polluting the water and bacteria will promptly flourish in such an environment. In turns, the bacteria will attack the bettas, which will become sick. So rule number one in betta feeding is DON’T OVERFEED!!! Try to achieve a softly rounded belly. Your betta should not look pregnant . On the other hand, If your betta’s belly looks “hollow” or too flat, then you are either not feeding him enough, or he has a bacterial infection causing him to waste away (or internal parasites).

My friend only feeds her betta, Squishy, two pellets once a day. She says that the people at Wal- Mart told her to do that, and since it's been 6 months, and Squishy's still alive, that she's doing something right. Does anyone think that she should feed her fish more?

My friend only feeds her betta, Squishy, two pellets once a day. She says that the people at Wal- Mart told her to do that, and since it's been 6 months, and Squishy's still alive, that she's doing something right. Does anyone think that she should feed her fish more? Yes, I think she should be feeding her fish more. I would gradually add an additional feeding each day with one pellet at first, then move it up to 2, etc. So the betta is being feed two meals per day of about 4 pellets each. That's just a general estimate as some people feed more, some a little less, but 2 per day total is not enough. Variety in a betta's diet is good also and mixing it up a bit with bloodworms or something of the sort would be great as well. It can help to give bettas more energy and keep their coloring vibrant. Here are some other ideas at the HB food page.Even if a betta is still alive after a certain period of time, it's not necessarily a good indication of its health. If the fish is kept in less than ideal conditions or isn't being feed enough it may be lethargic, have faded color, a lowered immune system causing it to be more subject to illness, etc. Basically it may not be representative of how the fish could look or behave given the proper care. People are often amazed when they go from keeping their betta in an unheated bowl to a heated tank (of the proper temperature of about 80 degrees F) for example as it's usually a complete turnaround in the betta for the better.

I have 2 types of pellets and fd bloodworms, and I mix up when I give them. I usually try to feed them twice a day, but sometimes I forget and its once. They usually get one type of pellet at one feeding, a couple bloodworms at the next, and the other type of pellet at the next. And if it's water change day, they usually get bloodworms then.
