My betta has always been spunky and happy and very much a ham. Lately he just stays away from the tank and seems to mope. He doesn't eat his normal food, I feed him a variety and he has become very picky. I remember my last betta loved the chinese algae eater I got for the tank. I'm wondering if maybe a little friend may perk him up.
He's currently in a 7 gallon cycled mini bow. Temp is always kept at 78 degrees, ammonia 0 ppm, nitrates 0 ppm, nitrites 0 ppm, ph 7.2. and I do weekly water changes 25%. I did just treat him with melafix for a week for slight fin rot, which is a constant battle (I feel due to his large finnage).
Any suggestion for loneliness? Can or should I add a friend? What can I add other than a snail?

you can get a ghost shrimp but all bettas react different. i tried a ghost shrimp once but all sudden storm turnrd turned hostile toward it. im not sure what you had in mind but most of the ghost shrimp work and they are a cheap way see how your betta will react to a friend. i hope this reply helps ya

i've had him now 6 months You mentioned that you just treated him for fin rot. It could be that he is still sick. Are his fins looking like they are starting to heal yet? I have never had any luck with putting other moving things in the same tanks as my bettas especially if they have been by themselves for any period of time this also includes snails. Do you have any plants or hidey holes for your bettas to explore in? Bettas love places that they can explore and hide in.

I have added a new plant to his tank to hang out in and changed one of the other ornaments. He has his hidey hole rock, but he is usually hanging out in the leaves. I'm thinking of removing the rock and putting another ornament that is differnet that he can hand out and hide in. He's already tried hiding in the conch shell

Is he eating his variety of food again?

everything in his tank is smooth edged, and his tail is starting to heal up from his bout. He just ate something different for me this morning, so hopefully that will continue. But I am sti;; toying with the idea of getting a little friend. Maybe

I am glad that your little guy is doing better. My suggestion would be to try to keep him by himself for a while and see how he is acting. I have found that in the seventeen years that I have been raising bettas, that they like human companionship more so than other water friends. There is a reason why they call them fighting fish.

well im back to treating his fin rot. i had him on a 7 day treatment with melafix last week and it seems like the rot got a little worse so I started the regimn again. his appetite is good, thank God. but I worry that I will always have trouble with fin rot because of large finnage. He's always been completely healthy and happy otherwise. maybe some new soft nooks and crannies will help too. But is there anything else that I can add to help the melafix? I'm wondering if it's not really working anymore.

You may want to try something stronger such as pimafix since melafix tends to be more for helping to heal injuries (from my understanding). Just make sure you put in the correct amount. If you think it's really bad (which it doesn't sound like it is at this point), you can have both meds in together (again, just make sure that you don't overdose as that can have damaging affects).
