Guys, check this out. Jim Sonnier has posted a genetics page on giant bettas. He says that at the Orlando IBC convention in 2002, they had 7 inch long bettas!! www.bettas-jimsonnier.com/genetics7.htm

My friend says his African Chiclid (sp?) can take on any betta (he's killed and eaten all his tankmates in a 30 gallon tank, including the other AC's). I need to show him that link and tell him that the 7 inchers can take on his cruddy little chiclid.

That big boy is amazing. He belongs in a koi pond, not a tank.

3.5" is considered half-giant? or is that at a certain age, and only applies to plakats?
one of my boys, wedge, is a long-finned splenden who's over 4" long and appears to still be growing...he's 3 years old. he was about 3.5" this time last year. (i measured him from mouth to base of tail, and i took the measurement from the top of the tank, and not the sides of the glass.)
those 7-inchers...oh man...

How do you measure a Betta? I can't get mine to hold still long enough to take a picture, let alone take their measurements! LOL

jedicat, That's a big a$$ betta, LOL. I'm not positive, but I think that these giant and half giant bettas reach that size when still fairly young. sef, I don't know, maybe put them in a small container so they can't swim away. I do this when taking pics and they come out a lot better.
