I have 3 Crown tail male bettas and 1 male Plakat, Sudan. I have noticed that it always takes Sudan longer to wake up in the morning. The 3 crowntails are begging for food the moment the lights are turned on but not Sudan. He is still sleeping under the heater. Also when I remove the cardboard between his and the Crown tail, Frodo's tank. Frodo goes nuts and looks like the lion in the Wizard of Oz- Let me at him! Let me at him! Sudan just stares at him from the other side as if to say, "You are such an idiot." He won't even give Frodo a flare, just a cold murderous stare. Does anyone else have both and notice any differences?

I have one plakat male named JD (Jim Dandy). His color is called steel blue but he's as close to black as it gets. Most of the time you can't even see his eyes.
JD sleeps in a lot and often misses a meal. He's in a well planted 2 gallon. I attached quite a few Java Ferns to a piece of driftwood several years ago. JD has a spot under the driftwood where he likes to sleep. I'll turn on the lights and all the sleepy bettas awake ready to be fed. JD misses at least one meal a week, sometimes in the morning. He sometimes retires early at night. He spends his days flirting with his neighbor Suzie. Showing off and darting around must tucker JD out. When he misses a meal, he usually is super-hungry when I feed again.

My plakat will flare endlessly at a mirror but he ignores Ming, my veiltail male. I find he eats *more* than Ming, and begs much more regularly >.<

(Hi, Nene! LTNTT!)
OK. I'm jealous of you Plakat people! I would really like to have one - and the laid back attitude is admirable. They're nowhere to be found around here & I have never ordered fish to be shipped... Did you all find them in your local area(s)?

I haven't seen plakats at the lfs as yet. One mom & pop fish store nearby occasionally gets what they call "fighters". They are pretty big and fairly old. They are not very pretty looking to my way of thinking. I once thought of buying one but am glad that I didn't.
There are a few breeders in my betta club that breed and show plakats. JD was given to me by one of our members. I first saw JD when he was a month old and flipped over him. My friend was keeping him for breeding and promised me another plakat from the same spawn. I was amazed when he showed up at our meeting and gave me JD. That was a year ago and JD has proven to be a healthy and fun betta. And yes about once a week he sleeps in and misses a meal.

I got Sudan at my LFS. If you will ask the manager at your LFS especially if it is Mom & Pop and not a chain, they can put in an order for a Plakat with their next Betta order as most Betta suppliers also have Plakats. Good Luck! They are very interesting fish, as are all Bettas.
