Amquel+ starting to smell REALLY BAD!

I've always been fond of the Amquel and Novaqua combo for water conditioner. About a month ago I decided to switch to Amquel+. Just recently however my bottle has started to smell horrible! It got to the point where we could smell the stink from outside of the cabinet I keep the closed bottle in. I called Novalek the makers of Kordon products and they had no clue what may have caused it to happen, especially after such a short time of having it. They are going to send me a new bottle for free, but I'm still left to wonder what may have happened. I thought I remembered hearing about the same thing happening to someone on the board before. Does anyone have any clue why the product would start smelling really bad? It is always kept closed and at room temperature.

Do you know what chemicals are in the product? Something could have gotten into the bottle and reacted with one or more of the ingredients to create another odor-producing chemical.

I had the same problem. Now on the back of the bottle I have it says something to the effect of odd odor is normal and will disappear on contact with water. I just hold my nose when I open the bottle now. I have also used Prime by Seachem which also address cloramines and it has the same statement so it must be something that is needed to neutralize the bad stuff in the water.

Does it bother anyone else though how Amquel now has screw-on tops? What happened to the convenient flip-up top to dispense drops of it? Do they expect me, a fish keeper, to have eyedroppers on hand? That means I have to smell it for longer time periods!! Although I have to say that none of my bottles since have smelled that horrible.

Well, I cheated and switched out my old flip top with the screw-off top that came on my last bottle Mine still smells odd but as long as I'm careful to use just the recommended dose I haven't had a problem in my tanks.
