When I was looking for some books to pick up on Betta's today, the first one I grabed rather disturbed me.
It was a book on how to pick, care for, breed, and BATTLE bettas. It had a whole section on people who pit their bettas against eachother and then nurse them back to health. IT EVEN HAD PICTURES!!!
How common is this? It seems so cruel to me. I mean, I've heard about letting the betta flare at a mirror or something, but having betta's beat the crap out of eachother just doen't seem right.

Its kinda like cockfighting. Its still around, tho its not hugely common. It is still pretty common in asain countries where there are no laws against it. There are people in the US who provide, train and fight bettas...you can even find very nice websites on how and where to fight your betta in the US. It is illeagal here. Did you check the copyright date on the book?...I'd be curious. Some fish stores I've been to have still had books from 1965-1970.
