My Kyle has Dropsy. I've lost 4 fish to Dropsy in the past year. Every few months it seems I have another fish come down with it. I went almost a year with no serious illness in my tanks and suddenly I have this Dropsy outbreak. It's maddening because I can't pinpoint anything as the cause. It's not specific to any one tank or even any two or three tanks it seems completely unrelated to anything I'm doing. None of the fish with water changes on the same days get it together or anything like that. I steralize and let my tanks sit and dry out before I get new fish, then I steralize it again before putting them into it.
My water is good, I have a private well and the water was recently tested at a lab here in town for ammonia, nitrates and nitrite's, chemicals, ammonia, bacteria, the works. There's nothing hazardous in our water, our water is great. We don't add anything to our water or anything either, no softeners, nothing like that. Our well is uphill from the road and there's no farmers using pesticides or chemicals anywhere near it. We garden but we use organic techniques and this all started before gardening season anyway.
This Dropsy crap has become a great big thorn in my side as I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what's causing it.
Anyway, on to the things I really have questions about. Does anyone know if I can use Epsom salts with the Maracyn/Maracyn 2 combination? I know Epsom Salts has sulfer in it or whatever and I couldn't tell from the Maracyn packaging if it's okay to use it.
I know Dropsy is hard to kick but Kyle hasn't pineconed yet and that gives me hope. He's mostly laying at the bottom of his tank gasping but when he goes up for air he swims around a little and checks things out before going back to the bottom. I caught it earlier this time and I hope I can save him.
Wish us luck and any dropsy comments or hints are greatly appreaciated.
