I dont know (for sure) what's wrong with my betta. He's a male, I've had him for about a year. I went on vacation last week and my mom was supposed to feed my fish. I usually feed him 3 pellets a day (1 in the morning, 2 @ night) and my mom fed him 4 a day. Plus, my little brother came in and fed him 3-4 pellets a day. I asked my brother to clean my (kinda dirty) fish tank. He didn't, but when I got home my Betta was swollen and a little discolored in his abdomen. He hasn't been eating for about 2 days, either. Other than this he's active and normal. I had a fish that died of dropsy before, and I dont know.. my fish seems to have constipation, except his scales are protruding. Not all over his body, just in the swollen area. Is this normal? When I got home from vacation yesterday I changed 50% his gravel and 75% of his water. Should I give him antibiotics? He lives all by himself in a 2 gallon bowl. The water temperature is about 75 degrees and hasn't changed. Please help. I'm a little worried

sounds to me like he is constipated. Has he been making any poop? The best cure for that is not to feed him for a day and then give him a peice of pea.
The amount of food that they gave him was not too much. I feed my own fish 8 pellets a day and they are fine. However, the sudden increase in the amount of food may have given him problems.
If the swelling is only around the swollen area, then it doesn't quite sound like dropsy, more just like the skin didn't have enough room to expand smoothly. However, keep a very close eye on it to make sure it doesn't turn into something else. Also, just in case, I would take any aquarium salt out of the water. It has been known to make dropsy worse.

since he hasnt eaten for 2 days already i would give him a bit of cooked, peeled, fresh or frozen pea for any constipation, he may grab at it, they really love them
3 pellets a day isnt the recommended feeding though, he should be getting 6 - 8 per day, so he actually accidentally got the right amount
was his water very dirty for very long? if so i think i would treat with maracyn, if it was bad when you left and then went for another week
what kind of tank is he in?
