I just lost Mr. Kravitz the other day to popeye and velvet. I have a new red betta who is acting kind of strange or maybe I'm just paranoid since I just lost my other one. He is staying near the surface, eating well, nice color, lots of energy, but darting up and down all crazy and disturbed. I don't see him scratching himself on anything and with the flashlight, I can't tell if what I see is just part of the gold in his scales (it's on his tail in the ridges but all uniform) or if it's really velvet or something else- I hope not since I just got him two days ago!! Does anyone suggest anything or am I just paranoid? Thanks!

I would suggest just watching him and the gold spots. If the spots get bigger or his behavior gets worse, then it may be velvet.
However, it is most likely nothing. When I first got Spazzy, he seemed to be darting around a lot, hence the name, but he eventually calmed down. It was just part of him getting used to the tank and all the space.

sparkly gold spots can be colouring, i have 2 bettas with that, like a sprinkling of real gold dust, very shiny. watch that the gold specks dont begin to cover the center part of his body though, mine are all on the fins and a bit on the face
i agree with jenny that it could just be his new environment. does he have a plant for privacy?
the move from a cup to a nice tank can be very exciting i think for them and they do tend to swim like mad for a while

A little Aquarium salt and Aquarisol in the water wouldn't hurt, I use these as preventatives for every water change and have never has a case of velvet or ich.
Did you put this new fish in the same container that Mr. Kravitz used to be in? If so, did you sterilize the tank/bowl first?
Good luck with your new fish, I love red bettas!

When I lost my first betta to dropsy I got a new one, like, a week later named Spitfire. His coloring was all normal and stuff, but he darted around his tank and stuff. After 2 days Spitfire died for no apparent reason. How long have you had him/her? Where did you get him? I hope your betta is okay!

Thanks for the info...This morning he looks good and was resting in his plant! I got him from a petstore..I couldn't stand seeing them all in cups so I had to get another one. I scrubbed out his tank, got all new gravel, and put the tank in the dishwasher (no soap). I did put aquarium salt in there as well as coppersafe. I hope all goes well.

Sounds like you are doing everything you can. He probably does just need to get used to is new home.
I run all of my fish stuff through the dishwasher without soap too, it's a great way to sterilize! I think for gravel and rocks, you can boil or bake them if you don't want to throw them all out.
A lot of new fish will swim up and down the sides of the tank to kind of get their bearings. He might be doing that too.
Good luck!
