I had my Betta, Flame in a 20 gal tank with 4 glo-lite Tetras and lots of plant and 2 caves. They have been living together for about 2-3 weeks. Today the Tetras decided to gang up on Flame and have done quite a bit of damage to his tail. I took him out of the tank and put him in a bowl of his own for now. I plan to remove the tetras from the 20 gal and put them in a 2-5 gal by themselves and put Flame back in his 20 gal. What can I do to speed up or help the growth of his fins back? Should I medicate to prevent any infections or just wait and see? I thought Tetras were ok tankmates for Bettas. Any ideas on why they attacked him? Thanks!

I think that melafix would be the best thing to help him grow back his fins. It is an extract of teatree oil. I found mine at walmart, and it works well for me.

That is what I'd recommend as well! Don't forget to buy an eyedropper with the Melafix, as it doesn't come with one.
Maybe Flame got irritated by the tetras and tried to attack one and they ganged up on him. It could be a number of things.. Sometimes bettas seem to prefer the space to themselves. I don't know much about tetras though. Do they tend to be aggressive?

I had read all about Betta tankmates before I bought any other fish and the websites I went to all recommened Tetras. It is weird that they attacked him. Maybe he did piss them off LOL!
Thanks for the help.

Forgot to ask if anyone has ever used BettaFix for fin regrowth?

I think bettafix and melafix are the same thing, only melafix is more concentrated, so you will need less of it.

yes, bettafix and melafix are the same, but bettafix more dilute, made by the same company, melafix by volume is MUCH less expensive. and as bethie mentioned, youll need an eyedropper, you can get them cheaply at pharmacies. bettafix is 48 drops per gallon while melafix is 10
i dont know that any fish is an infallible tankmate really, even danios will nip, the only one i know for sure personally is corys, theyre totally non agressive, but very fast fish will tend to play and i dont think they mean harm, it just happens and they dart away
i buy all of my fish in pairs for my tank, i find that way they dont tend to fight, they can school in a small way, they dont get cocky i think
i have 2 gouramis and 2 corys and 2 danios in each of my large ones. the larger also has one kissing gourami and 2 placos
if i put more of something in theres usually a bit of nipping, but i dont really notice any now
