I was given 2 betta's today. My mother in law didnt want to care for them anymore. I'm glad that she finally gave them to me after months of not caring for them properly. When My wife came home with them, the water looked as if it hadn't been changed in months. And she used to use distilled water. I didn't want them in the filthy water any longer, but I knew the ph differnce and the difference between distilled and tap water might (probally would) put the Betta's in shock So I put a cup of declorinated tap water in their vases every 15 minutes or so about 6 times. then I changed the water. so far so good. Any thing else I can do to help them recover? besides clean water, thier fins look like they have a little fin rot but I was suprised it wasn't worse. Sorry for a long post.

That's great to hear that they're in the hands of someone who will give them better care from here on out. I would make sure they are in a place where they won't be disturbed for a few days to give them a chance to settle in. This will also give you time to assess their overall health. I'm not sure what you tend to feed your bettas, but I'm sure the new ones wouldn't mind a bloodworm or two (or other high protein food) if you have them on hand. Do you know how much/often she was feeding them? If it wasn't much, you'll want to gradually introduce more food to them at meal times. As always keep them warm and like you said the water clean. Good luck with them and keep us updated on their condition.

I agree with Rachel. Keep them somewhere quiet and feed them a little high protien food. You don't want them to get tummy aches! =D
Also, you might want to add a little aquarium salt to the water. This will help them recover from any bacteria and help thier tummys. Good luck with them!
What colors are they?

Thank you all so much.
I hope the cat won't notice them.
