I am a new member to this forum, and also a new betta fanatac! I have 2 males, in separate tanks of course, but with 2 very different personalities. The first original male did not seem happy in the 2 gallon tank which I set up for him, but since I have put him into a smaller (not tiny) bowl he swims around quite a bit, and today, 1 week on since purchase, I woke up to find a pile of bubbles on the water surface. Is this a good sign that he is more happy? He is eating well, but the other thing is that he wouldn't move around in the lounge room but seems to love being in the bedroom! Is this acceptable? Forgive my ignorance but I want to be sure he is OK. The second male is in the larger tank in the lounge, eats when I'm not watching, but swims around less. They seem very different personalities. Would like some feedback on whether they seem to be OK.

Hello and welcome to HB Well from the sound if it your new bettas are just taking a bit of time to settle into their environment. It can take a few days-week to get used to the new tank and take advantage of all the space. A bubblenest is a nice sign, although it isn't always an indicator of good health. It does tend to be the case that bettas will act differently from each other and appear to have a variety of personalities as you've mentioned as well. It's nothing to worry about! You'll just want to make sure each one is showing signs of good health - bright color, good appetite, unclamped fins, lots of energy, etc. In general, a good place for any tank is a spot that is away from direct sunlight, drafts, and somewhere it won't get bumped or disrupted too much from loud noise. Bettas do like attention from their owner, so they'll appreciate being in a place where you will play with them outside the tank. You'll soon learn the "feed me dance" and other fun things your bettas will do. If you haven't already done so, I'd encourage you to check out some of the articles and information on the HB website and here at the forum in past threads about the requirements and care your bettas need.

thank you rachel. I am happy to have a reply, and am certainly looking at the other members threads on this forum today. The 2 are doing well, and yes I have seen this little dance in the mornings, but didn't realise it was for "feed me!". I hope in time I will recognise all their personality traits, but you have put my mind at rest as to their looks and location etc. maryrose

I am giving him 2 pellets in morning and 3 in the evening which I thought was the right amount? This morning in the early hours I actually lay in bed and watched him bobbing away from one side to the other building a proper mound of bubbles, not just a few here and there. I feel like a new parent with a clever kid! These fish seem to turn me into a gushing female who wants to share him with everyone, and I think I'm not alone in this from what I have been reading here. I now have three bettas...Lucifer (the original), Orlando and Vincent...all in their own little world and all very active, eating well and a great joy to watch. Where was life without them?!

Correction-the number has now gone up to 4. I went out today to upgrade the size of tank for one of them, and of course came home with another fish as well! I swear this is the last one...he is a deep red all over, has the longest lush fins, and a really cute face. On this one you can really see his little face and he seems very curious...he is watching me type this with his face pressed up against the glass...his name is "Zeus"...don't know why it just came into my head when I saw him. Don't know if anyone wants to know this, but just wanted to share it as I get real excited when I bring a new one home!

Congratulations on your new betta Zeus. The amount of pellets that you're giving him right now sounds fine, just make sure that it equals to around the size of his eye since that's how big his stomach is.
