you need to know all those parameter otherwise, I can't give you a very exact cause of why your fish is acting like that. In order to keep a fish healthy one must need to know the water's parameter. your fish can be suffering from ammonia poisoning, nitrite poisoning, a PH shock, or a very low PH. You must get these ASAP.=)

OK you can get the test kits you need in your local pet or fish store, if your budget can't afford the test kit at once ( where I live each of them is roughly $9.99) go to your nearest fish store or pet store that sells aquarium fish, ask them if they can test your water for free for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and PH. if they say no, then you will have to buy all these stuff, the tests kits that I use are all from aquarium pharmaceuticals. If you are totally new to fish keeping, check out this site www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/cycling2.htm it will explain basically what ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate is, and also why not check fishless cycle at the bottom of the page so you can familiarize your self. this page will explain to you what a Ph is staff.jccc.net/pdecell/chemistry/phscale.htmlmost fish will thrive in water of a Ph of 6.5 to 7.5, but try to keep it as close as you can to 7.0 which has a neutral Ph. Also check Amanichen's web site (Brian's fish corner) which will put you on the right track. s94779296.onlinehome.us/website/Fish/index.html

usually you can go with the rule of thumb and have one inch fish per gallon, sometimes you can slip in some more fish BUT for my it is hard to tell you how many you can have. Just start by having 10 one inch fish if you like, or 2 5 inches fish, or six one inch fish and two 2 inches fish you can make up any combination you like as long as it is around 10 inches worth of fish. Just keep it around 10 inches of fish and you will be fine as long as your tank is cycled.
