Hi everyone. Recently i have noticed a large growth on my bettas abdomen. It's not constipation (I have seen him poop recently) or dropsy (did not respond to Marcyn/Marcyn II when i was treating him for tail rot, even though his scales are kind of pineconey). I think he has cancer . He has been having trouble swimming recently (his back end is always sinking, and he has to swim with all of his fins to keep himself up). I think this is because the tumor is pressing on his swim bladder, idk. He still eats greedily and flares at his neighbors when I take the paper between their one gallon tanks away. Anyway, the point of this post is...how do you know when to euthanize your fish? I know not to do it now as he seems pretty happy, but when do you make that decision? When he is unable to eat? When he lies on the bottom without moving all the time, just breathing? When he stops flaring at his neighbors? Help! I am worried about my Jazzy and i don't want him to suffer unnecessarily. (thanks and sorry for the long post).

I think that you base that decision upon on your personal opinions, but I'd euthanize a fish when I know there is no hope for him to survive, because they suffer throughout the development of their disease not just when they are lying on the bottom, not eating and have clamped fins, that just means it is his final moments.

Hey thanks for the support. I don't know if i'll ever have the courage to put Jazz down. Thanks again. I've decided my personal opinion based on various people's advice: when his quality of life is too poor or he appears to be suffering more greatly than a good quality of life would permit, i would have to euthanize him. But until then (if that day ever comes) i will take care of him as always and be extra nice about giving him treats. thanks again.
