I recently purchased a package of aponogeton bulbs from Wal-Mart and dropped them in my tank early yesterday. This morning a few of them appear to have a thick layer of a fuzzy, translucent white substance on them.
I am concerned that I have introduced a large quantity of spores or bacteria to my tank, and it is either fungus or bacterial growth that is covering these bulbs.
Has anyone else had a similar experience while using aponogeton or other plant bulbs? Should I remove the offending bulbs, or does this seem normal/harmless?
Of the variety of aponogeton bulb shapes included in the package, only the bulbs shaped like sweet potatoes are affected. Perhaps this is just a characteristic of this species?

I wish I had an answer for you. It sounds like normal plant fibers and I doubt that anything would come in from a dry bulb. More likely, any fungus in the aquarium already (in very small amounts) could have preferred certain bulbs when you put them in.
Just keep an eye on your tank for anything funny. Maybe be ready with some salt in case it's fungus.
