My computer took a major crash yesterday morning, with of course all of the pictures that I have taken the past couple of years with my digital camera. I am so upset. My fiancee did a little research online and it looks like a device driver is the problem. We are hoping that we can at least get it restored long enough so that I can get my pics off of the computer. It is my own fault for not putting all of them on a disc in the first place. I have definitely learned my lesson on that one, and hopefully all of you won't make the same mistake I have and have put all of your pics on a disc or on something else. Needless to say I only have access to a computer once a day so I won't be able to speak to all of you as often as I have in the past, which makes me sad. I am hoping to get a new pc at the beginning of the new year or I will go crazy. Wheww! now that I have vented I feel better.

Oh, I'm so sorry accountingchick Yes, I used to keep all my pics on the computer....my daughter pointed out exactly what you've been through, that I was only one untimely power surge away from losing my memories. Plus, now that I moved them onto CDs, turns out I have tons of space on my hard drive! ;D Good luck with the recovery process.

so sorry!! I know things about computer and sometimes it is due to two drives that are having a conflict. to check wether there is a conflict right click my computer-->manage-->device manager then check if there is a yellow exclamation sign next to the icons. The same thing happened to me too.

Ugh, how frustrating! Good luck getting things fixed up. I lost everything on my hard drive a few years ago and it was pretty upsetting since a lot of it wasn't backed up. It happened right near the end of a semester and luckily I had all of my major school projects also saved on a flash drive at the time. I certainly learned my lesson and back up my stuff quite a bit these days...better safe than sorry imo, especially with items such as pictures that are irreplaceable.

That sucks! I hope you resolve the problem! As a word of advice, invest some money into an external hard drive. All you have to do is hit one button every day and it'll backup your files, rather quickly too

I just thought that I would update you all on my computer mess. We took it to a friend who knows some about computer repairs. Well he put off looking at it for a couple of weeks and when he finally got to it he told us that it was something that he could not fix and to take it to a repair shop. We dropped it off at the repair shop last week, and they informed my fiancee that the mother board was broke and was beyond repair, so now we have to get a new computer which stinks, but mine was getting old anyway. The good news is that the repair shop is ordering us a new one and is going to cut us a deal on it and on the labor costs of tearing apart our old computer. The cost of all of this is going to be around a $1,000, which is a good deal because the new computer has a lot more memory and my fiancee will finally be able to play his warlord's game on the new one without the computer seizing on him and I won't have a computer that is slower than dirt anymore. I should be getting it later on next week. I will let you all know when it comes. I can't wait since it has been a month that I have been computerless and losing my mind.

I know how frustrating that must be for you!!! Do they think they will be able to recover any of your lost data (and fishie pictures)? Depending on what went wrong sometimes they can do that....if the hard disk itself is undamaged you should be able to get someone to retrieve the data. Good luck and I hope it comes soon!

I forgot to mention that. They are going to save everything on my hard drive. I was absolutely thrilled about that. I was scared that I was going to lose the pictures of my niece and nephews and of my departed baby Little Charlie, but the computer repairman has come to my pictures rescue thank goodness.

If it was just a device driver that crashed your computer, its really no big deal, just slap the harddrive into another computer and load it up, as long as the MBR (master boot record) and partitions are still in tact, chances are the other computer can load up the harddrive for you to pull files off it, if you don't feel as though you can do that, buy another harddrive of the same or larger size, and send it off to the many companys that specialize in data recovery, they'll charge you about $40, and you'll have a second harddrive to backup all your important information too.

With all due respect to accountingchick, I don't think she's a power user, or an enthusiast when it comes to computers

I just know how to turn the machine off and on, how to run some software, and am still getting aquainted with the internet. My fiancee knows a little, but not enough to repair this mess. I live in a small town, I have been without a computer for a month now and am also a college student, so I need something asap and this just seemed to be the best solution for me. Thank you though for offering those suggestions jeromee. If I had a clue about computers, I am sure that it would have been a big help.

One thing that you can do, if you have web space is to upload your pictures and "park" them there. I have been doing that for a few years. Most of the time I download the pics from my camera, view them, and then upload them. If I want to send a copy to someone I just give them the URL in an email. I can also save them back into my PC and if I want to print I just send it to the "large retail store online photo department" and just pick up the pictures. I also have sent the file to a friend or family's "large retail store online photo department" and tell them when they will be ready.
I too had suffered through a crashed PC. I was going from a dial up provider to cable. For some reason the dial up provider did not uninstall properly and corrupted some key file, I do not remember what it was. To fix, I need to reinstall Windows 98. I never made recovery CDs, so I was kind of out of luck. I could of purchased Windows XP, but for a few hundred $$ more I just bought a new PC that was configured for someone who decided they did not want it, so I got a great deal on it last year when I bought it.
I learned my lesson, if your PC / Laptop does not come with a recovery DVD or CD, make them!!!!!!!!!!!!
