I have found that a few mins every day is way too few for mine. I let them all the afternoon seeing each other, and when they are tired/bored, they just turn their backs to each other like "see ya" (the red one is an expert on doing this). As I have some plants, when they get bored or tired of flaring they also go hide in there. I also have a double-faced mirror and I place it between their tanks, and I've found that this is the best way to tease them to make bubble nests.

I don't have a set period of time for mine, but my fish seem to like to flare at everything outside of their tanks as it is. So whenever they see motion in the room they tend to flare at that for a while (either that or do the 'feed me dance'). I have a screen in between tanks so they can't see each other on a regular basis, but I let them see each other every couple of days for a little while and they'll keep it up for as long as the divider isn't there. You're right in that it does seem to promote bigger bubble nests.
