My local petstore has beautiful little 2 inch koi! I love koi so much and I want to have one of my own. I currently have a 10g tank but have yet to set it up. I know this is a betta forum, but koi and betta have similar qualities. Koi are a peaceful fish and don't do well with other aggressive fish. They eat plants and tiny animals.
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about raising a koi in a tank. What sort of fish would they be good with? I know I can't put that many fish in the small tank, but I'd like the koi to have friends.
I'm not going to put my little betta in the tank. And after the koi outgrows the tank, he's going into our pond in the backyard. I kinda want to raise him up so that birds don't eat him in the pond.

Like all goldfish, he would need that 10 gal. all to himself, and if you intend to grow him much larger, he will need more than that. I do know, however, that even chain stores don't recommend keeping koi in aquariums for very long. Are there other fish in the pond? Have you looked into their care at all, after you transfer him to the pond?
