Apparently it's not limited to bettas. I just saw one of my male guppies chase his own tail and try to bite it. I guess it's a side effect of breeding long-finned fish.

Really? That's interesting to know. Is this the first time you've seen it in other fish?

Biting in general is pretty common among fish, where ones with long fins are huge targets for it =)
I've never seen it outside bettas until now.

Wow that's strange, I never knew other fish did that either.

Mine does the exact same thing. His tail starts to grow back, he bites it again. It's very frustrating. I don't know why, but I just thought I'd let you know that you're not alone! ;D

My betta does the exact same thing too...his tail fin grows back rapidly, so the longest time I've seen his tail longer and intact was about 2 weeks. I was praying he wouldn't bite off the nice new growth, but 2 days after I had that thought he bit it off again! So I just gave up and accepted it. As long as he's healthy, I don't care

Yah mine is very healthy only thing ever wrong was bitting his tail. I noticed that he bit it again today just a little on the edge. Im starting to wonder if he likes his tail a certain length and if it gets larger he bites it off. SO far he has kept it at a length that it is "almost" a slight ugly half moon shape. mabey he want to be handsome?

My crazy male only bites his tail when he's alone in a tank. And that means finding him tankmates that he won't bug, and that won't bug him.
