Hi! I have the Hex 5 and he seems to be doing a lot of swimming around... I am glad he can spread his fins so to speak. I don't have any silk plants as of yet, so there are not any in there... just glass stones and his T tube and the glass spice shaker without the top. I was wondering (I also looked online) if there were suction cup shelves one could put on the interior of the tank to make like a second floor or "loft" so the betta could relax closer to the top to the air.... and still swim around in a "large" tank. (5 gallon) It would also give another surface to decorate.. ;D I am just imagining what it would be like... having to go from the basement to the attic to "breathe..." though fish and humans are different creatures. I've seen only one type of shelf, and it was for half land, half water tanks, and formed a tray so you could put a layer of substrate on it. It attached to the side using suction cups.
You might want to check a store or website that specializes in marine equipment, because they might have something that's used in building aritifical reefs.
