Hey all. Just got a new 10 gal tank and am interested in dwarf gouramis. I have a few questions though. Would it be better to keep them with other fish, or just themselves? If just themselves, how many should I stock? If with other fish, what fish go well with them? Any stocking suggestions (how many and what fish)? Also - I have heard that using peat in the chemical stage helps gouramis out a lot. True? Any comments would be appreciated.

i don't know about peat. You can keep gourami's with other fish *usually*...sometimes you can get a very agressive one. But most of the time they ignore the other fish in the tank. Most any small community fish would work...just stay away from other labryinth fish (i.e bettas), and anything too small the gourami 'could' eat. The biggest thing with these guys is you usually end up having to keep only 1 in a tank smaller than 40g...I tried to have 3 powder blues in my 29 and it just DID NOT WORK...the dominant one would not let the others eat...one died before I could do anything, the other I took back to the store before he starved. Another thing you have to watch for: (especially if you are getting them at wal-mart or other big box) They commonly have internal parasites when you get them. I don't know why its so common, but even now I'll check them at a store and they'll have symptoms. So quarantineing these guys is a MUST...and watch the stock that you buy for a couple days before you buy them. Watch for funky looking stomachs, and white stringy poo. HTH

Thanks. Yah I'll keep my eye out for that - kinda sad isn't it? I was thinking a dwarf gourami and either 4-6 neon tetras, 4-6 white clouds, or 4-6 guppies. Any thoughts?

I've also kept two power blue dwarf gouramis before in a 29 gallon tank. They would occasionally chase each other but I never had any problems with nipping, etc. And they didn't bother any fish, but they occasionally eyed one another. Oddly enough, I got some Honey dwarf gouramis about three weeks ago. They're the most docile gouramis I've ever seen, and they don't bother each other, or my other fish. Until now I haven't seen this type in a pet store, but if you can find them they'd be a good choice. s94779296.onlinehome.us/website/Fish/mytank/mytank.html

Alright - my idea is 1 dwarf gourami with 6 neon tetras. I will be using aquarium sand and live plants - so I might consider an otto as well. If the tank was bigger I would get corys - but that would overstock this guy. ANy thoughts? Also, for amanichen (the water chemistry master) do you have any thoughts on using peat in the filter instead of carbon for gouramis? Obviously it would "stain" the water - but I have heard it helps the gouramis. Should I do it?

I have 6 black neons, 3 bronze cories and two otos with my gourami. If you are going to go with cories, go with either three pygmy or panda cories, because they dont get nearly as bronze, albino and peppered do. The only reason I have bronze cories is because they don't stock the others in my area.
