is it ok to cut drift wood in half if its too big for the tank???

It should be fine. Wash off any sawdust.
If excess tanins leak out of the cut wood, either cure the wood in a separate container, or change your tank water more frequently.

in this case curing means that you need to boil the wood in order to take the tannic acids and chemical compounds out of the driftwood, there are more ways of curing driftwood such as soaking it in a bleach/water mixture (1 cup bleach/5 gallons water) for a few days. You wouldn't want to have all those acids in you aquarium...you know what happens=). So yeah I guess that's a brief explanation.
