Ok, so it turns out that the fish used for table decorations at the dinner were four big (fat) fancy goldfish....does anyone have experience with this fish? I have a 12 gallon tank for them to live in...I have heard goldfish need lots of space, is this enough for now? They're about 1.5" long each...no clue whether this is "full grown".... Argh! Why don't people just use doilies for table decorations? ?

I don't really know if I can help but maybe I can try. Ok how many fish are you keeping in your tank? I heard your supposed to use at least 10 gallons for 1 or 2 fish, but I'm not sure if this is true or not. But because they're messy it would be a good idea to not over crowd the tank. What type of fancy golfish are they? Orandas, moores, fantails, etc.?

Gosh, it is disappointing to hear this trend of using fish as decorations is so popular still. Unfortunately I don't know much about the care of cool water fish, such as goldfish, myself. Just throwing this out there, but is it a possibility that you would consider taking the fish to a store and donating them back? Let us know how things go.

Well, you know me...I love all creatures, especially the unloveable ones so we'll probably end up keeping them....I'm doing all sorts of research and basically sharksrock is right (which I thought), that goldfish need lots of water...so we may end up having two tanks very soon.... Any ideas on appropriate tankmates for goldfish? As long as we've got cool water tanks going, we may as well enjoy them

I figured that would be your reply. I just thought I'd mention it since you're going to have to upgrade for them and you weren't really prepared for their arrival, etc. I hope all your critters appreciate just how much care you put into them. Good luck.

Quick update: We have put all 4 goldfish in the 12 gallon tank temporarily....currently uncycled, please think good thoughts in our direction and planning to get at least one more tank.... they all seem healthy and happy, I've got to get some different goldfish food... My son is having fun learning how to test the water with his master test kit For those of you who don't have kids (yet), it's SO HARD not to help him along and to let him learn at his own pace!! I'm sure I'll have a panicky-post in a day or two....

Hmm... I'm not all that knowledgeable when it comes to goldfish, although we used to have a goldfish tank in our house (a 33gal, which is now home to 7 female bettas insted ) From what I can remember they seemed to be pretty hardy fish, and survived the cycling process without too much trouble. We used to keep about 10 small feeder ones and a couple of fancy goldfish in there without any issues. (of course I had no idea they should've had a lot more room ) Good luck, hope everything works out!!

Thanks for the info ...one of the goldfish died Friday, I think he was injured before we got him. So far water tests still show ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 0...I'm starting to wonder if our brand new test kit is working But they're active and seem happy, so we're just continuing with water tests and small water changes.
