At Amanichen's and Rachel's suggestion, off I went last night in search of a proper ammonia test kit. There are only three pet stores within a reasonable distance for an after work journey. The first only had kits that measure total ammonia. Ditto for the second. The third didn't even have ammonia test kits, but before I left, I noticed they DID have bettas in cups that had enough waste to signify there had been no water changes in many days. So, I inquired if there was a manager I could speak to. When he responded, I politely pointed out that it was cruel to keep his bettas in filth. If he did nothing else, a simple water change would be compassionate. I took a few steps toward the door, and heard him loudly respond "You're giving these fish too much credit lady...they're every bit a stupid as a bunch of cows in line at the slaughter house." My guy, who was with me, replied "oh man, did you just make a BIG mistake". I turned around and told him that the obsolute arrogance of humanity never ceases to amaze me. Up to this point, I assumed you were merely ignorant. Now I realize you are grossly stupid, and a menace to boot. I always give ignorance the benefit of a doubt (you can be enlightened), but to stupid I offer no quarter. A number of years ago, mankind coined a phrase to distinguish what they though were "lesser" creations. They dubbed them "sub species", and you sir, are their poster boy. Well, I was thrown out of the store, but my guy looked at him and said "not only did you make the wrong comment to a 27 year vegetarian and captain of her debate team, but I think she just emasculated you and it will be a long while before you recover from that!". Well, I began this post hoping to keep a long story short and I have failed miserably, but I'm still fuming. Sooooo, I actually have found ONE ammonia test kit that claims to test for free ammonia and it have to be a catalog order. I will certainly let you know what I get as readings when it arrives.

You go girl! That took some guts. Even though I believe in the same things you've told that man, I would of never been able to tell him like you did. I'm not even going to mention what I think of that guy, it wouldn't be appropriate, but wow =)

Thats great that you took the time to stand up for our little finned friends! I still can't believe that the manager said that! I mean, the worst they should do is not really listen to what you are saying, but to say something as ignorant and rude as that is just ridiculous. I mean, talk about bad customer service. Anyway, its good that you are going to get your test kit and I can't wait to hear the results.

Good to hear you found one =) BTW, here's the chart I was talking about: edis.ifas.ufl.edu/BODY_FA031Basically, find your pH, and temperature, and find the cell that corresponds to it. Multiply the number in that cell by your total ammonia, to get free ammonia. What brand is the test kit you ordered? It's not LaMotte by any chance is it?

You know, I just got the guts to check the reponses on this post....thanks so much for this great chart! I found a master test kit in my Dr Fosters & Smith catalog. It is by Hagen and will set me back a cool $60, but now that I have a brood developing (Rachel predicted this) , I'm sure it will be worth it. I was so surprised to see no one thought I was Godzilla for losing my cool...

I found a master test kit in my Dr Fosters & Smith catalog. It is by Hagen and will set me back a cool $60, $60 isn't much. A single ammonia test kit from LaMotte is usually $50. LaMotte is top quality stuff, but the Hagen one should be MORE than sufficient for what you're doing =) As long as you're not using an Aquarium Pharmaceuticals, or Jungle test kit then you should be ok

Hi all, BeansMom, you got guts, man...the manager sounds like a moron After reading posts about crappy pet store employees, I have extremely low expectations...I don't even want to ask them anything, because the info I'm told is hit and miss. I actually refer to this forum and website now I had a question about test kits as well...there are SO many kits to choose from, and I can't figure out what to get...what's a good but reasonably priced kit that I could buy? I have a 1gallon, unfiltered tank. Thanks!

Thanks for the info twoluvcats Wow, I went to Petco and it was a ripoff ($30!) compared to prices online. I'm plan on going to Petsmart over the weekend... its kinda far for me, but they probably have more supplies anyway. Side question: what are the most important things to test for if you have a 1 gal, unfiltered tank? Just pH and ammonia?
