I usually do 20% water changes every week while keeping the Betta in the 10 or 20 gallon tanks they are in. The only time I cup a Betta during a water change is when I am doing a thorough cleaning scrubbing the glass and I use a plastic fish container to cup him in because it hangs on the inside of the tank and that helps maintain the water temp in the container.
I was cleaning Baby's tank using the cup and so he is sitting in this container that hangs into this 20 gallon high tank. This container is filled with his tank water It sits at the top of the tank and as I'm vacuuming out the water, the level of the tank water was going lower than the level of the container water. But BABY was looking at the tank water level and he kept getting lower and lower in the container thinking the water level in the container was droping when really it was the water in the tank that was droping. When the water in the tank was the same level as the bottom of his container poor BABY was actually laying on his side so as to try to stay in the water. Finally as the water in the tank was clearly below the bottom of the container BABY slowly rose up into the container with the dumbest look on his face like "how is this happening". He was so surprised that there was still water in his container he just couldn't believe it. It looked so funny as he was trying to get real low in the container to stay in the water when all the time his container was filled with water. You really had to see it to get the kick out of it that I did but the look on his face after he realized there was water in his container all the time was priceless.
