I use the liquid type, and I use Aquasafe, but alot of other members use Prime. It's really just prefence. Prime is cost effective, or so I've heard.

Novaqua+Amquel, Aquasafe and Prime are three of the best, and most popular water conditioners available. Since they all basically work as advertised, you won't really go wrong with any of them.
Prime is my choice because it has the capability to detoxify ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, chloramine, and chlorine. It also doesn't affect the pH of the water. (this is of course straight from the label.)
Regardless of what the label says, Prime is my choice because of its performance and its low cost per gallon of water.

OK now for my second question...where can I find these brands cheap .. im a struggling college student. Just about any pet store, and online. I should note that I'm also a college student, and I also have a set budget for fish, but that doesn't mean that I can't provide for them.

Right now I'm living off of my paycheck from a month ago. I just started to work this week and on friday I will get my check. I still provide for my fish, in fact, a lot of the old paycheck went towards the fish, the tank, the plants, the cave etc etc etc lol. I hope I didn't give you the impression that I'm making my fish suffer. I buy things for them more than I buy things for myself.

I buy things for them more than I buy things for myself. I did the same thing when I was a student and short on cash. Unfortunately a lot of things in the fish hobby are expensive and add up quicky! I don't think you gave the impression that you don't care for your fish correctly, so don't worry. Prime might be a good choice for you as a water conditioner then because it is inexpensive and goes a long way - only 2 drops needed per gallon. I think the smallest bottle is only $3-4 at Petsmart for example.

I use Prime also. I bought the larger bottle on sale from Petsmart for $8.99. I'm about halfway through it - it gets used for five bettas and a tank of fiddler crabs - and I bought the bottle in January. If it doesn't spoil, Prime is the best conditioner in terms of usage vs. price that there is.

What are your guys' opinions on Stress Coat? The LFS really pushes it and even refills bottles for a discounted price.
I've also noticed that a lot of places around here carry a product called Aqua Plus...

For a stress coat I used the stuff that came with my filter, its called "Start Right" made by Jungle Labs... not sure if its the best but it worked for my fish. Thanks for the replies guys, I'm going to head out tomorrow to get some prime so I can give my fish a couple more inches of swimming room

I use Aqau plus for conditioner and I only use stresscoat if I have had to medicate or something...I will give them stresscoat after meds are done just to give them a little boost for healing.

Stress coat is an OK water conditioner, but it's not nearly as chemically able as the others I mentioned above. It doesn't properly deal with chloramine, which means if you have chloramine in your water, you have to add another product.
Regardless of what the aloe in it does, Stress coat isn't a medicaiton, and shouldn't be used as one. I haven't seen any evidence outside of the manufacturer's claims that shows what effect aloe has on fish -- they claim to have third party research, but don't provide any links/paper names.
Teresa, If you're already using aqua plus, you don't need the stress coat. Don't waste your money.
================
I don't have any personal experience with aqua plus outside of my three years at a pet store (it is what we ordered for use.) It seemed to work well enough =)

Thanks. I'm using Stress Coat as a conditioner now because that's what the pet store recommended, but I'll look into getting something else once this bottle is gone (it's only a small bottle).
