I have had over 20 Betta fish and they all seem to die at almost exactly 2 years of age or very close to that. That includes counting the 4 to 6 months old they are when I purchase them. How long have your Bettas lived?

my 'oldest' right now is ~7months out of the store, and I think he was about 8months when I got him from petsmart...so he's just over a year, and doing well.

How long have your Bettas lived? Unfortunately two years has been a problem zone for me. I've lost a lot of bettas around that time. Some a couple of months past 2. One female lived to 2 1/2 years. I know my bettas actual ages.

That's not exactly a problem because 2 years is their average life expectancy. I asked because I've heard and read how some Bettas can live 3 years and longer but I've yet to meet anyone that has had that privilege of seeing their wonderful Betta get to 3 years.

I've had my betta for 6 monthes... yesterday to be exact. But I have no clue how old he was when I got him. He was relatively small though, and he's grown a lot. I thought that they lived for 5 years?

Most Bettas are anywhere from 3 to 6 months old when you buy them from the Pet stores with the average age being 5 months. I sure wish Bettas lived 5 years on average but that is not the way it is. They only live two years on average but there are reports of some Bettas living as long as 5 years and even longer. Unfortunately, that's a rare thing. And it's just so sad because if you ever had a Betta for a while and gave him/her some quality time you know they are as curious and friendly and adorable and loving as a pet dog. I'm learning that the Females seem to be more friendlier and lovie dovie than the males. I have a female called Little Tracy dying of old age now and she is the most remarkable Betta I ever had. She will swim into my hand when I put my hand in the water. She will actually let me pet the side of her body as she lays in the palm of my hand. She will come when I call her and go to her sleep area when I say "Sleep sleep time'. She is the inspiration behind the book I am writing about Bettas and is just the most amazing fish I have ever had the privilege to care for.

Yesterday I lost Moby. I had him since March 2001. Over the last year or so, I could see he was getting old, just laying in the plants, not his frisky ornery self anymore. Over the last few days, he declined rapidly, and I found him dead last night. I really miss that little guy... I am Bettaless now. I am not sure if I will get another at this point.

Wow, nearly 4 years, plus the (probably close to a) year old he was when you bought him! I can only hope that most of my little friends get to live that long!

sorry to hear about Moby. He was definately a great fish to give you 4 years of pleasure. I know how upset I get when I lose a Betta after 2 years so I can imagine how much this loss hurts you. But in the spirit of Moby when you can bring yourself to it, I hope you do decide to save another Betta from shot glass hell!

I'm afraid I'm losing my Betta. He is turning gray and hasn't eaten in 2 weeks. He doesn't show any symptoms of any of the diseases listed on the Healthy Betta website. I've provided a low-wattage lamp to warm up his water, and I have changed his food. I guess he's just ready to go to Betta heaven. I've had him almost 4 years.

Sorry to hearyou are losingyour Betta after 4years but from what you described it does sound like he's ready for Betta heaven. But it is a wonderful think that you were blessed with having him for 4 years. That twice their average life span. Good luck with him and any new Betta you save from shot glass hell in his honor.

I've had my betta for 6 monthes... yesterday to be exact. But I have no clue how old he was when I got him. He was relatively small though, and he's grown a lot. I thought that they lived for 5 years? [glow=red,2,300]TEXT[/glow] TEXTTEXTI do not know how old my betta was when I got him, but I have had him for a year next month. When I got him he was actually sick which I didn't know because I got him at WAL-MART and they kept them in little plastic cups which only hold like a cup and half of water, so I coudn't really see him swim around and stuff. So I made the big mistake and bought him, I COULDN'T HELP IT! He was (and still is, thankfully) SO colorful and looked at me as if he needed to be saved! My mom (yah, I'm a kid, I'm 12) actually made an exception (she must have felt sorry for the guy) and let me buy him. So I got home, put him in a bigger container (about a half gallon) and it became clear he was sick. He would always be floating on the top, like he had an air bubble in his back (does anyone know what that is?) . Fortunately He stopped floatin in about a month and has been my healthy betta ever since. Two days ago I also got him a new 1 gallon aquarium. He seems to enjoy it alot, especially the bubbles from the filter. (I got it at wal-mart for 18 bucks! Not bad, so, what the hay!) Well, see yah! Stef, your friendly betta owner (oh yah, my betta's name is Auquafina! You know, the bottled water? ;D)

Good luck with your new Betta Stef. Likey your Bettawas between 4 and 6 months when you got him. It's terrible theway these fish stores keep them in these little cups but the Wal-Mart by me at least puts them in cups twice as big as the smaller cups that most stores keep them in. FYI, for about $10.00 more you can find a 10 gallen starter kit at some Pet Stores. I've seen them priced from about $19.00 to 39.00. If you havetheroom and can afford it 10 gallons will be like giving your Betta a mantion to live in and you can do a lot less maintenance as you don't have to change the water as often as you do with a 1 gallon tank. I never seen a health issue such as you have described in any of my Bettas so I can't comment on that. the important thing now is that he's better and that's great so you must be doing all the right things for him. Best of luck with Aquafina and I hope he's lives a long time.
