Good luck with your new Betta Stef. Likey your Bettawas between 4 and 6 months when you got him. It's terrible theway these fish stores keep them in these little cups but the Wal-Mart by me at least puts them in cups twice as big as the smaller cups that most stores keep them in. FYI, for about $10.00 more you can find a 10 gallen starter kit at some Pet Stores. I've seen them priced from about $19.00 to 39.00. If you havetheroom and can afford it 10 gallons will be like giving your Betta a mantion to live in and you can do a lot less maintenance as you don't have to change the water as often as you do with a 1 gallon tank. I never seen a health issue such as you have described in any of my Bettas so I can't comment on that. the important thing now is that he's better and that's great so you must be doing all the right things for him. Best of luck with Aquafina and I hope he's lives a long time. Thanks for the advise! Stef

My betta finally let go yesterday. He struggled so at the end, and I didn't have a clue as to how to help him. But he's in Betta Heaven now.
Here's to you, my Fins, you brought us much joy!

Stef, It sounds like you did real nicely for him. You saved him from a sad death in a tiny Wal-Mart cup. You had him for nearly a year and he was at least 6 months old by the time you got him. I think that you did very well by Aquafina.
I hope that you get another betta real soon.
At Healthy Betta we'll always be here to help you.

Best of luck with Aquafina and I hope he's lives a long time. i have a fish-shop near my home. often i can see 1-2 dead bettas floating in other jam bottles. & the jam bottles used for storing the bettas r not sanitized. most of the bottles with live bettas are half-filled with water & have remains of tubifex worms, dust & poop swirling all over the water. the length of a big plakat is almost similar to the diameter of the tiny bottle. its like worse than living in a prison cell. wat a pity. fortunately, yesterday 1 of the bettas caught my eye & i managed to "save" it from Betta Hell. its a Purple Giant Plakat HM with nicely-shaped royal-blue fins. no streaks, no freckles & most importantly no red-wash. he's huge & twice as large as my CT. i need to get a larger tank coz' he's pretty active. he seems to be adapting well. i fed him Bio-Gold + some Betta Food granules (to boost immunity) & he took it with no hesitation.

I got my first betta, Spartacus, in college. I kept him in a medium-sized bowl for four months, only to loose him in a dramatic water-changing accident over the sink that involved the drain and me screaming into the the little black hole as my buddy slid effortlessly down it. My family still laughs at me to this day, and I'm much more careful around sinks. My second betta, Rajah, lived for a year and a half in hexagon hell, as I now know it is. I don't know how my poor guy survived in that little thing with only a small plant for company. I changed his water often and gave him all the love and care I thought was best for him, seeing as I was told (by a pet store professional!!!) that my previous betta would have died anyways becuase I had given him too big of a home. I was literally scared into buying one of those little things. When I finally found out, it was too late. Rajah jumped out of his "cup" after a feeding when I forgot to put on the lid (I was planning on buying him a bowl the next day) and two days later died of either stress or injury, still not sure which. Now, with my current betta Captain Jack Sparrow (also known as Jack-Attack), only a month old as far as being with me goes, my husband and I have been doing research into these wonderful animals and am truly guilty for the loss of Rajah but also amazed he lasted as long as he did. In fact, my husband convinced me to spoil Jack in a ten-gallon tank (betta-friendly buddies to come later, maybe). Sorry this was so long...kinda felt like a betta confessional...

Well Stef, I actually have a top floating betta. Chester has had a rough life. I think its a swim bladder problem. He isn't suffering and is still as obnoxious as ever. I'm hoping that he will come out if it. Its good to hear that yours did. I think you did a great thing getting your new betta a new home. remember to get a small heater to keep him warm. They like it around 80 degrees. Keep us posted on how he's doing.
now to the question at had. I think the longest I've had a betta was three years. Mostly the tend to stay with me about 2 1/2 years or less ( because I rescue a lot that aren't in good shape. I think it takes time off their lives).

I had my male betta for (this April) will be two years! Yesterday I had to euthanize him (how Horrible) because he was sick w/ some kind of eye disease!!! Usually when he got sick from something I nursed him right back to health!! But not this time. I couldn't stand to see him suffer anymore, thinking "ok, he'll just pass on his own". Nope. He tried for 2 1/2 weeks!!! No med or cure in sight!!! I finally got to the point that I could not take him suffering and gasping for a breath!! Now, I am very squeamish, but a higher power helped me do what I needed to do. I feel as if I shot Old Yeller!!!! My daughter and I had a funeral for him and I know he is in a "BETTA PLACE" Amen.
