Do you have any other established tanks set up? Or friends with established, disease free tanks?
If you do, "borrow" or trade the sponge from an established tank ... squeeze the "dirty" water and gunk from the sponge into your tank, and use the established sponge in your new aquaclear (give your friends a brand new sponge!). The sponge is full of the nitrifying bacteria that is essential is cycling a tank.
You can also take some of the mulm you get when you vaccum your established tank, let the water settle so the mulm is at the bottom of the bucket, drain off the excess water, and add the mulm to the new tank. The good bacteria will seed the filter, gravel, decorations and other surface in the tank, and the filter will take care of the "dirty" appearance.
We have used this technique, and it is a really fast way to speed up the cycling process.
Good luck!

you can try Bio Spira. As far as I know, it's the only bacteria you can buy that actually WORKS in freshwater tanks. I do think you have to be careful with what chlorine removers you use though, as some will kill the bacteria. The package tells you which you can use safely. I read that you should put the stuff in the tank and then an hour later you can add the fish. You need to get the fish in there fairly soon after, as the bacteria will die if they don't have something to feed on, and they don't have anything until the fish is in there! It's a bit expensive - it was $15 at my local petshop. You can buy it online for $9 but they kill you for shipping, ($16!) as it has to be kept refrigerated before use and they make you ship it two day express. I bought some but don't know if the Amquel I used killed them or not and if I threw 15 bucks out the window. So if you're willing to spend that amount, check your local pet store to see if they carry it. Google it if you want to read up on it first.
