HI! I bought 2 bettas Mar/05 and they have been doing really good. We have well water with a softener. I've been getting the water for my fish from a tap that has not reached the softener yet (straight from the well). I add Betta Plus bowl conditioner and warm the water by putting it in a container in a sink of hot water and monitoring it with a thermometer. With the spring thaw and heavy rains our well water (tested at the tap before the softener) Ph goes up passed 7.6. Is it OK to use the water that has gone through the softener? ie: kitchen tap.
Another question is about algae. I've never had trouble with algae before in the tanks but recently I have to do a complete cleaning twice a week. What would cause this? Will it harm my bettas if I just do a 50%-70% water change after 2-3 days and a complete cleaning once a week? I don't care to buy an algae eater.

If it's 7.6, then you shouldn't worry. Do you know exactly how high it might go? It depends on how the softener works. If it exchanges sodium (Na) for calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) then the answer is no. Many freshwater fish won't tolerate much sodium in their water. Unless your water is extraordinarily hard, you shouldn't need to soften it for bettas. If you have a water quality report, or have test results from your water source then it'll be easier to determine what need to be done.
